During these years from 1830 to 1844 Joseph Smith, as presi- dent, and the members of the Church had wandered from place to place, a persecuted people. From New York they went to Ohio, then to Missouri, where they built cities with homes, churches and civic buildings, but, in 1839, they abandoned all they owned in Missouri and sought refuge in Nauvoo, Illinois which was then near the frontier of civilization. Even before the death of their beloved Prophet, the Mormons knew that they would have to seek refuge in a place where they could live by themselves. Such places as Oregon, Texas. California and the Big Basin of the Rocky Mountains were oft times mentioned. Thomas Ford, governor of Illinois, advised that the Mormons be induced to leave the state of Illinois noting that California was a place in which they might settle. About this time Stephen A. Douglas advised the Mormons that probably they could find asylum on Vancouver Island. On February 20, 1844 the President asked the Twelve Apostles to send an exploring party to California and Oregon. Then a delegation was sent to Washington asking for protection for the citizens who would immigrate to the territories. Stephen A. Douglas later advised the Mormons to strike out for Oregon and "gave them the map of Oregon and Fremont's exploration report," but while these negotiations were going on Joseph Smith was martyred in the Carthage Jail. His successor proved to be Brigham Young, outstanding leader and colo-nizer. President Young and his associates realized that the Saints must leave their beloved Nauvoo, but before making plans to pioneer western United States, he wrote a letter to Governor Drew of Arkansas asking for a place of refuge for his people in that state. This Governor Drew refused, but he advised them to go to Oregon, California, Texas or even Nebraska. A plan was then made…
