Description: "The Lurker at the Threshold" by H.P. Lovecraft with August Derleth - Stated 1st PRINT Paperback - Published in 1971 by Beagle Books - 160 pages - Very good condition. The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. So wrote H.P. Lovecraft, in his groundbreaking essay Supernatural Horror in Literature. H. P. Lovecraft was one of the most influential writers in the history of horror fiction. His style is unique, mixing fantasy, science fiction, and horror to make truly frightening tales that have scared readers silly for nearly a century. His characters inhabit a world of strange places, ancient gods, and above all unspeakable horrors. The Lurker at the Threshold is a horror novel by American writer August Derleth, based on short fragments written by H. P. Lovecraft, who died in 1937, and published as a collaboration between the two authors. Ambrose Dewart was the last lineal descendant of the Billington family. So it was natural that he should come to the legend-shrouded town of Arkham, Massachusetts, to take up residence in the old family mansion in Billington's Wood—even though the house had stood empty and shunned for over a hundred years. Dewart found a rich legacy of disturbing features awaiting him: an ancient tower surrounded by a ring of stones in the forest, a strangely disquieting window of colored glass which offered glimpses into some weird dimension of horror, a library of dark and secret lore, and family legends involving mysterious rites, ghastly deaths and disappearances, and the conjuration of vile, age-old Powers from beyond space and time. Most frightening of all, Dewart found his arrival had brought these horrors to life again. And the Lurker was once more preparing to cross the Threshold. There is some edge wear mostly on the top of the cover, as well as some rubbing on the cover (see the scan), but this book is still in very good condition. No collection of H.P. Lovecraft books is complete without this one. Please see the scan for the great artwork on the cover and so you can judge the condition for yourself (unlike many other booksellers, who post generic scans, the book in my scan is the one you will get).
