She was born in Epivates, on the shores of the Marmara Sea (in the province of Thrace), in Roman controlled Greek Anatolia, near Constantinople (Istanbul), into a wealthy and noble Christian family. Her pious parents gave her and her older brother, Euthymius, a solid religious education, and raised them in the tradition and practice of the Orthodox Church. She had visions of the Virgin Mary. After living in Chalcedon and Heraclea Pontica, she settled in a convent in the desert near the Jordan River, where she died at the age of 27.She is a perfect example of living according to the Gospel; loving God with all the soul, heart, strength, and thy neighbour as oneself. She is beloved in Romania as Sfânta Parascheva and in Serbia and Macedonia as Petka. Her feast day is celebrated on October 14th. The miracles of Saint Paraskeva for more than one thousand years has touched in profound ways the lives of millions people throughout the world, by providing for those in need, soothing pains, comforting the sorrowful. The life of Saint Paraskeva is an invitation to us all to join the call in serving and feeding the poor from wherever we are.
