Evinces some UV toning to top exterior edges of red cloth boards, esp. fto front board, and some very mild, minor spot stains to same (see photos). Otherwise, book is in excellent condition for its age. Binding is very sound, square and tight; hinges and gutters very sound. Titles pasted to spine are complete and remain in fine condition. Endpapers with map of expedition are complete and undiminished. Some foxing noted within to page edges; some very light age toning to exterior edges of text block. Leaves within generally remain bright and crisp; text and illustrations unaffected by toning and foxing. Illustrated throughout with b&w photographs of the expedition. Overall, this is a Near Fine, collectible example of the first printing of this rare and intriguing historical account.
