The author of the History is a champion of the original community and compares it favourably with the Gloucester house, as well as giving his reflections on the duties of superiors and subordinates in the monastic life and describing and assessing the individual priors. The editorial introduction describes the manuscript, sets the History in context, and advances a theory about its authorship. Author Biography Robert Bartlett, CBE, FBA, is Bishop Wardlaw Professor of Mediaeval History Emeritus at the University of St Andrews. He received his university education at Cambridge, Oxford, and Princeton, and taught earlier at the universities of Edinburgh and Chicago. His books include The Making of Europe: Conquest, Colonization and Cultural Change 950-1350, which won the Wolfson Literary Prize for History, England under the Norman and Angevin Kings 1075-1225, and Blood Royal: Dynastic Politics in Medieval Europe. He has written and presented three television series for the BBC, Inside the Medieval Mind (2008), The Normans (2010) and The Plantagenets (2014).
