Ukiah 11. The Captain And Me With their 1973 release, The Captain And Me, The Doobie Brothers showcased a broad musical base encompassing R&B, gospel-blues, jazz and rock. Highlighting two of the group's best known hits, "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove," the LP established both The Doobie Brothers' commercial appeal and their reputation as major musical innovators. Formed in 1970 as a bar band in San Jose, California, The Doobie Brothers' original lineup included Tom Johnston (guitar, vocals) and John Hartman (drums). Guitarist Pat Simmons was added for the group's debut album, The Doobie Brothers (1971). While the twin guitars of Johnston and Simmons courted comparison to the Allman Brothers, the group quickly established their own musical identity with their second album, Toulouse Street (1972). Featuring newly recruited members Mike Hossack (drums) and Tiran Porter (bass), a full range of styles were displayed on the album in such songs as "Jesus Is Just Alright," Sonny Boy Willamson's "Don't Start Me To Talkin'" and the group's first chart hit, "Listen To The Music." Toulouse Street quickly became a million-seller. The Captain And Me followed in March, 1973. Produced by Ted Templeman and featuring drummer Keith Knudsen (replacing Hossack), the album confirmed The Doobie Brothers' hit-making credentials with two Tom Johnston originals: "Long Train Runnin'" (a Top 10 hit in May of 73) and "China Grove." The Captain And Me also featured such Doobie Brothers perennials as "Natural Thing" and "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman." The group's second million-seller, The Captain And Me remained on the charts for over a year.
