Description: The British Almanac for the Year MDCCCXXVIII and The Companion to the Almanac; or Year-Book of General Information for 1828 - First edition published by Baldwin and Cradock First editions. 60 and 186 pages respectively. Two volumes bound as one in grey cloth with a gilt-lettered leather title label to the spine, the boards are bumped, rubbed and stained and the spine is chipped and split with cracking at the hinges. The text block is quite toned, foxed and marked, with short closed tears and creasing to the edges of some pages, the official red tax stamp to the title page and a small monogrammed bookplate to the front pastedown. The first year of a famous and popular Almanac, which was published until 1914 in various guises, its stated aim to counteract "the ignorance and imposture" peddled in other more dubious long-running almanacs of the period. Seemingly the only one published by Baldwin and Cradock with Charles Knight taking over from 1829.
