Description: THE BRITISH AIRMAN ( Experiences of War) Roger Freeman,Experiences of War series. London 1989, Arms & Armour Pr, UK First edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, Fine/Fine condition, 175 pages, numerous illus, index. --------------------During the Second World War more than a million and a quarter men and women served in the Royal Air Force, the majority against Nazi Germany and its European allies. For each individual, even those who fulfilled quite a humble role, the experience has a firm place in memory. Most participants, even 50 years after the event, still refer to it as `the war', more recent hostilities presenting no challenge to the years 1939-1945. This book endeavours to capture the feel and flavour of that RAF experience through the opinions, observations and anecdotes of veterans, the `ordinary bods' - although `special' would be a truer evaluation of many. Each man's or woman's involvement was small in the great scheme of things, but this collection of some 300 individual memories places the experiences in an overall perspective. Comment ranges from the reason for volunteering to impatience over `demob'; from food and attire to aircraft and equipment. Narratives of typical understated humour contrast with those of stark horror. Contributions from cooks, clerks, fitters and a score of other `trades' give a picture of life as lived by the `ground staff, while the reminiscences of aircrew present the attitudes and deeds of those who faced the perils of combat. The volunteer who chose the RAF simply because he would be able to wear a tie; the rigger who, having spent hours effecting a fabric repair on a wing, stood up to admire his handiwork and slipped a foot right through it; the pilot who stayed the night at a Navy establishment and awoke to learn practical jokers had given him the commander's pyjamas and bed; the trauma of an air gunner trapped by centrifugal force in a spinning bomber; and a VC's personal account of the action that brought his award - these examples demonstrate the range of these recollections. It is, in short, the RAF of Hitler's war as recalled by the mate who served. In addition to featuring some of the individuals who are quoted, the photographic collection covers locations and hardware relating to several of the incidents. Most pictures are previously unpublished. The author, who has written extensively about the men, aircraft and operations of the 1939-1945 air war, contacted more than 300 RAF veterans in the course of preparing this work, including mate from the Commonwealth and the once `occupied' countries in Europe. ( Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many distribution centers, that are being implemented by the US Post Office - we are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be patient ) WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS & WE KNOW BY BITTER EXPERIENCE JUST HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE.
