Description: Here we have a experimental CD gem from composer/player/experimetal artist TERRY FOX: Ataraxia, released in 1998 by the Plate Lunch label, now out of print. This disc compiles five vintage Fox pieces (one appearing in two radically different versions) that the composer considers to be among his most important sound works. So do we. Terry's music lies in the realm of installation art, in which he creates an environment for generating sound (usually a very large room), that never or seldom involves musical instruments as we know them. Instead, he transforms the space itself into the instrument. Three pieces are what is known as long string installations, where metallic strings are stretched across a room, then plucked or stroked with rosin-coated fingers. The resulting sounds are beautiful gliding tones, rich in harmonic content, or individual notes that seem to vibrate into eternity. Another piece is played on two large metal bowls that are bowed along the edges with violin bows. In the remaining piece, Fox ties an aluminum rowboat in a large echoing metal tunnel, then he and two others "play" the boat with all manner of everyday objects. All these performances are completely acoustic, deploying no electronics other than the microphone used to capture them. This is one amazing, hypnotic CD, sure to impress fans of drone-based artists like Paul Panhuysen, Arnold Dreyblatt, Ellen Freeman, Alvin Lucier and David Jackman, among others. The disc is near mint. Track listing Suono Interno 2:50 Rallentando 2:50 Lunar Rambles 9:24 Culvert 9:24 Berlin Attic Wire, Beating 24:44 Berlin Attic Wire, Bowing 15:07
