Description: Tecoma capensis is a vine or climber in the Bignoniaceae family. Some familiar names are Cape Honeysuckle or Cape Trumpet-Flower. A native to southern Africa. It is not closely related to the true honeysuckle. This scrambling shrub can grow to 10 feet high and 4 feet wide. It will stay evergreen in warmer climates but will go dormant in cooler temperatures. The leaves can get 6 inches long, but I have only seen them a few inches long. A wonderful vine for a wall or fence. The flowers are tubular, around 3 inches in length in clusters. They can come out throughout the year in colors ranging from orange-red to apricot. You can cut this one back to 2 feet if it gets to scrambling too much. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade and is drought-tolerant, which everyone loves. It is visited by birds, bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Zones 9-11 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days.
