Description: Tankard Mug Stein Artist d' Valle of D'Arcy Studio Hanging Red Berries 1903-1915 Tankard Mug Stein Artist d' Valle of D'Arcy Studio 1903-1915 Hanging Red Berries An Exquisite HAND PAINTED Decorative TANKARD MUG, Hand Painted Hanging RED GOOSEBERRIES w/LEAVES & Thorny Vines, Artist Signed d'Valle of D'Arcy Studio in Kalamazoo, Michigan 1903-1915 While this heavy tankard mug is unmarked by the manufacturer, it is truly beautiful and professionally painted in the style of the early 1900's. The tankard mug was painted by a very talented artist to be viewed from all sides. The artist signature is d'Valle of the D'Arcy Studio. The red decorator's studio mark is stamped on the bottom of the tankard. Frank P. D’Arcy & his wife, Josephine P., owned a jewelry store at 115 West Main Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The D'Arcy Studio was established in 1903 in the back of the upscale jewelry store. They became world famous for very high quality art pieces comparable to Pickard and Stouffer of Chicago, Illinois. The studio remained in operation through at least 1915. In the trade journal, “Keramic Studio” Volume 9 1907 D’Arcy Studios advertised for “3 or 4 good china painters” for flower and fruit. Over the years associated with D’Arcy were such renowned artists as Frank Yeschek, John H. Schindler, Louis Groskopf, Joseph Gunther, and Josef Henke.. While this tankard mug is classified as used, its condition is excellent. We can find little damage and no defects. The handle and the bottom of the mug has some scuffing wear from normal use. See the photos. There is no rubbing to the paint. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. Only the slightest crazing exists on the exterior bottom; this is right next to the decorating studio mark. It is clean & white on the inside. This tankard mug has a base of 3 3/4" and a top diameter of 3 1/16". It is 6 1/4" tall. We do want to note the hole which was drilled into the top of the handle during manufacturing and definitely prior to painting as color goes into the smooth hole. See photo #10. We assume this was for the purpose of attaching a top as some steins have covers. It is obvious from the condition of the gold trim on the rim that this stein never had a top. As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky and find it necessary to point out anything we see. We believe you will be very intrigued with this vintage decorative tankard mug.
