SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Tanith Lee was born in 1947 in London and she died in 2015 in East Sussex. Her parents were professional dancers. Despite a persistent rumor, she was not the daughter of Bernard Lee (the actor who played “M” in the James Bond series of films between 1962 and 1979). She and her family were relatively poor and had to move around frequently due to her parents’ work. They did maintain a large paperback collection and Lee was able to pursue her love reading. Lee noted that she loved the story “Silken Swift” by the great science fiction writer Theodore Sturgeon and the story “Gabriel Ernest” by Saki. She and her family discussed such literature as Hamlet and Dracula. Lee attended many different schools because her parents moved around so much, but she was always interested in reading various forms of literature. She began writing her own material at the age of nine. After she graduated from high school, she attended Croydon Art College. After a year she realized that she did not want to attend college, she dropped out and held a number of jobs, including file clerk, waitress, shop assistant, and assistant librarian. She began publishing with “The Betrothed,” in 1968, a short story privately printed by a friend, but started seriously writing with several children’s fantasies. Her first professional sale came from “Eustace,” a ninety-word vignette at the age of 21 in 1968. Her first novel was a comic fantasy entitled THE DRAGON HOARD, in which an enchantress compels the quest-ridden protagonist to shapeshifter into a raven at unpredictable moments. Her career began to take off with DAW Books publishing her her adult fantasy novel THE BIRTHGRAVE, a mass-market paperback. During the nineties her “career went through the doldrums” because of trends in publishing. Major publishing companies were less accepting of Lee's later works. The companies which Lee worked with for years refused to look at her proposals. Smaller companies were publishing just a few of Lee's works. The refusals did not stop her from writing and she had numerous unpublished novels and short stories. Letters from fans asked if she were dead because no new work had been published. Lee tried changing her genre, but to no success. However, Internet sales succeeded in reviving her writing. Lee had “quietly phenomenal sales” at certain periods throughout her career. When she tried changing genres, some of her works were liked by critics and published by small publishers, but it made no difference. The royalties were good before the publishers went bankrupt. During the 1980’s Lee published three collection: DREAMS OF DARK AND LIGHT (published by Arkham House, offered here), WOMEN AS DEMONS, and THE FORESTS OF THE NIGHT. Lee’s style is frequently remarked upon for its use of rich poetic prose and striking imagery and has been described and vibrant, exotic, rich, elegant, and darkly beautiful. Lee was also famous for featuring nonconformist interpretations of fairy tales, vampire stories, myths and other aspects of the fantasy genre and of Gothic science fiction. Lee indicated that she was influenced by writers and playwrights such as Graham Greene, Elizabeth Bowen, Jack Vance, Fritz Leiber, Theodore Sturgeon, Angela Carter, Jane Gaskell, Charles Dickens, Tennessee Williams, John Fowles, Margaret Atwood, and several others. Tanith Lee was the author of such great and collectible books as THE BIRTHGRAVE, DARK DANCE, CAST A BRIGHT SHADOW, A DIFFERENT CITY, KILL THE DEAD, THE BOOK OF THE DAMNED, THE BOOK OF THE BEAST, THE BOOK OF THE DEAD, FACES UNDER WATER, SAINT FIRE, A BED OF EARTH, VENUS PRESERVED, NIGHT’S MASTER, DEATH’S MASTER, DELUSION’S MASTER, BLACK UNICORN, GOLD UNICORN, RED UNICORN, THE CASTLE OF DARK, THE GORGON AND OTHER BEASTLY TALES, DREAMS OF DARK AND LIGHT (offered here), DISTURBED BY HER SONG, COLD GREY STONES, and many, many others. Clearly Tanith Lee was (and remains) one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible science fiction, fantasy, dark fantasy, and horror writers of all time.

From the dust jacket: “ . . . The Scheherazade Of Our Time . . . Publication of THE BIRTHGRAVE in 1975 heralded a new and brilliant luminary in the firmament of modern fantasy. Ostensibly a sword-and-sorcery epic ink the tradition of Robert E. Howard, this novel about a youthful heroine with incipient psychic powers astounded readers with its striking originality and intense emotional impact. Tanith Lee today is one of the most versatile and respected writers of fantasy, horror, and science fiction, and DREAMS OF DARK AND LIGHT represents a massive mid career retrospective of her achievements over the previous decade . . . Here are unforgettable tales of werewolves that prowl chateaux, an Earthwoman in exile on a distant planet, demons that inhabit bodies of the living dead, a race of vampiric creatures who prey upon a cursed castle, and many other works of exotic vision, mythic science fiction, and and contemporary horror. Also included are two stories that have received the World Fantasy Award, ‘Elle est Trois (La Mort)’ and ‘The Gorgon,’ making DREAMS OF DARK AND LIGHT a distinguished one-volume library of myth-weaving at its most eloquent and evocative . . . Tanith Lee has long since transcended genre conventions to create a body of work of remarkable psychological depth and artistic distinction . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . TANITH LEE was born on 19 September 1947 in North London and attended the Catford Grammar School and Croydon Art College. After a succession of entry-level jobs in library service and clerical work, she was able to become a full-time writers when DAW Books purchased the Birthgrave trilogy in 1974-75. ‘I had written since the age of nine,’ the author recalls, ‘and so this event simply allowed me to continue doing what I had always done — the only thing I could do really well — with the energy and financial support hitherto lacking.’ Over the past ten years Tanith Lee has had published thirty-three books, and several episodes for a television series. Her interests include music, painting, psychic powers, and ancient civilizations . . . “ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Leon Nielsen. I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________ CONDITION:

A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. This feels like an unread copy of this book. The book is tight and square in its black full-cloth binding with very bright gilt lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the correct light yellow endpapers. There is no writing in the book, no bookplates, and no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows its correct 1st state publisher’s price of $21.95. The dust jacket has no chips, no tears, and no wrinkles. The only slight flaw to the dust jacket is that the spine panel has a hint of fading (but not much). This is a superb and collectible copy of this 1st edition of DREAMS OF DARK AND LIGHT. I use the EBAY shipping system to send out the majority of the books that I sell. Insurance is included in the shipping charges for this book that the buyer will be paying. One would assume that the buyer would want to insure this book for its correct value. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN HORROR/DARK FANTASY/FANTASY/SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF ARKHAM HOUSE 1ST EDITIONS ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request.

I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to "give" these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings.
