This was particularly one of my favourite items. Suiseki refers to natural stones that collectively represent landscape scenes. While they are often used in combination with bonsai to create a scenic element, they also play roles as a "receiver" for the main tree or as a principal element resembling distant mountains. Suiseki and bonsai have an inseparable and profound connection. Suiseki is said to possess an infinite charm and depth that provides tranquility to those who view it, to the extent that "the ultimate hobby lies in stones." There are forms of this art, such as "suiseki display," where scenes are created solely with suiseki and accompanying elements, and "bonseki," where stones are placed in a tray to create natural landscapes like mountain passes and rocky scenes. The appreciation for suiseki has been nurtured within the Japanese sensibility for a long time, allowing one to reflect on the myriad forms of nature in stones that have etched history over millennia. Suiseki is not just a material; it is closely tied to the concepts of "wabi" and "sabi" as well as Zen philosophy. It is said to resonate with the spirit found in bonsai, Japanese gardens, sumi-e (ink wash painting), and ikebana (flower arranging). The idea is that understanding stones, which evoke the wonder and subtleties of natural creation, can deepen one's appreciation for bonsai by enabling the imagination of landscape scenes.
