Description: Okay, some kimono people are about to learn themselves something. You're seeing this odd kimono word; sanpogi, and wondering what the *bleep*? Some antique collectors might know the answer to this question, and they're already like the smart kids in the class with their hands up in the air begging for the teacher to call on them. Sanpogi literally means 'strolling wear' or 'walking wear,' and it was a kimono you would wear if you were going on a walk or going on a shopping trip. It was a piece you wore to get noticed and be fancy and to be extra as all heck. Sanpogi kimono are usually really high quality and really awesome in the amount of fun experimentation and boundaries that were pushed when kimono was more about fashion versus a whole bunch of really stuffy rules. You can hear the contempt in my writing for modern kimono rules, I'm sure. ANYWAYS; identifying Sanpogi goes about like this in short: Does it kind of look like a tomesode? Does is have some funny business going up top despite being a suso muyou ( design along the bottom of the hem )? Does it look like a komon and a tomesode had a baby? Okay, you're probably looking at a sanpogi. They went out of fashion post-war; so you really don't see them, or if you do, they're just classified as a houmongi or a tsukesage. Crests can range from none to one, to three or five even; they can be embroidered or painted. Okay lesson over. This is a beast of a sanpogi; she looks really chill and sedate but the quality of this piece is really a sharp smack in the face. First off, this color? This color was a bane to photograph; this color is like a combo of a denim blue and a periwinkle. It's not quite blue and it's not quite purple but it also isn't the dreaded blurple so we'll go with dark periwinkle; which is a hard to produce pigment to say the least and it's GORGEOUS. Luscious kinsha silk on this; softly dappled with a good amount of body and drape. This is the good silk. We have some really expensive urushi work in this one, check the photos for it. This is money in silk form. Lots of urushi. The art is super sedate; but check the hand-painting. It's simple but very well-done; this isn't cheesy stencil work. We got narcissus and orchids. Beautiful kamon on this one; highly desireable tsuru ( crane ) crest kimono; and embroidered. Treat this as a single, embroidered crest houmongi for wearing. There are some smudges on the shoulders and collars; a couple small, light spots, please see photos. This is wearable for a non-picky wearer. Pretty good length on this one. These are REALLY hard to find; for one a lot of people even in Japan don't know how to spot them and they get listed as tsukesage or houmongi and fall through the cracks; and then a lot of them are already in collections because they are pretty well-sought after in Japan and used to be in the kimono communities way back in the day when I was a wee silk baby. No odors. No rips or tears. As a note, this piece is meant to be worn aggressively low on the back of the neck; the collar is notched very deeply and the sleeves are set back ala Geisha hikizuri. It is not a hikizuri in the least, but is meant to be worn low on the neck LIKE a Geisha's hikizuri. Take that as you'd like. I'm only selling this one as I bought it for wearing; but the company I bought it from couldn't be arsed to measure it correctly; and 165cm turned out to be 157cm. Rude. 157cm long62 cm yuki ( half shoulder ) 54cm long sleeves 22cm front width, 28cm back width ( double these for width; add 16cm for both of the okumi panels ) I list my measurements by traditional kimono standards; if you're a non-kitsuke person and need help for sizing to wear pieces as cardigans or robes, please message me for help.
