Description: ZIMET, JAYE. Strange Sisters. The Art of Lesbian Pulp Fiction 1949 - 1969. New York: Viking Studio, 1999. First Edition. Paperback Original. Signed by the author, Ann Bannon, a novelist of this lesbian paperback original golden age, who contributed the foreword. Additionally signed by Julie Ellis who wrote under the name Joan Ellis, and two of her books are illustrated in this book. Also signed by pulp artist Robert Maguire. Paperbound. Oversize format. Illustrated throughout in full-color. A few few fine scratches to the fron cover otherwise fine. A collection of 200 examples of cover art from the bold and the campy sub-genre of lesbian pulp fiction. With titles like Odd Girl Out, We Walk Alone Through Lesbos’ Lonely Groves, Warped Desire, Deviate Wife, Satan Was a Lesbian, etc. it’s clear that the target audience from the publisher’s point of view was male, but for many lesbians of the time these books offered a welcome chance to identify with a community. From the foreword by Ann Bannon: “...women learned to recognize what was a nascent literature of their own by reading the covers iconically. Despite all their editorially imposed quirks, the covers provided links among members of a wide-flung and incohesive community; a community that did not even think of itself as one and that, therefore, valued all the more any connection with others whose experience paralled their own.” A fascinating and entertaining work.
