Provenance: Clarke Galleries, Stowe Vermont. This drawing features a scene the artist must have captured while visiting Montauk Long Island in 1937. Two fishermen aboard their dry docked fishing boat most likely prepping her for the opening season. Or closing her up for the offseason. Blodgett’s distinct impressionist drawing style is on full display in this artwork. A gorgeous drawing by the artist. Inscribed Montauk 1937 Estate stamped and estate inventory number stamp on verso Matted. Not Framed Condition: Very Good. The drawing with some gentle waves more noticeable in sunlight than indoors. Measurements: Matte Size - 14” x 17” Sight Size - 7 3/4” x 11” Walton Blodgett received his artistic training in New York City at the Grand Central School of Art, and later with George Luks. His earliest works were stark depictions of New York City skyscrapers. During the summers of 1928-30, he studied with George Pierce Ennis in Maine, and it was then that he developed his interest in watercolors and landscapes. In 1936, he was employed by the U.S. government to paint in Key West, Florida. In 1941, he relocated to Stowe, Vermont, where he was able to pursue his interest in depicting the natural beauty of that state. He died in Stowe in 1963.
