Description: STONEWALL JACKSON AND THE OLD STONEWALL BRIGADE EDITED BY RICHARD BARKSDALE HARWELL FINE CONDITION BOOK FINE - CONDITION DUST JACKET PROTECTED IN A CLEAR, BRODART COVER Frontispiece of General Jackson Clean, Sharp, Solidly-Bound Book Frontspiece Illustration of General "Stonewall" Jackson; Referenced and Fully Indexed PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA PRESS FOR THE TRACY W. McGREGOR LIBRARY, CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA, IN 1954 This is the first separate printing of John Esten Cooke’s Stonewall Jackson, and the Old Stonewall Brigade. The original text, even to its erratic punctuation, has been followed except for the correction of a few typographical errors. John Esten Cooke might well be called the Ernie Pyle of the Confederacy, for his writings breathe the atmosphere of the camp and capture the very spirit of the men who fought under Stonewall Jackson in the Old Stonewall Brigade. These were the men who earned the sobriquet of “foot cavalry” – men who marched from Harper’s Ferry to Strasburg, nearly fifty miles, in one day – men who marched barefoot over icy roads in the wake of the man they called “Old Jack.” And Cooke, a writer-turned-ordinance officer, given a vivid portrayal of the quiet man in the old sun-embrowned uniform and the faded cap, the man who “moving about slowly and sucking a lemon” looked like anything but a general – the man who could awaken such enthusiasm in his hungry, weary troops that soldier who heard a sound of distant cheering were apt to remark, “There goes Jackson or a rabbit!” But with all his obvious and honest admiration for this subject, Cooke never indulges in blind hero-worship. He makes a conscientious effort to give an accurate evaluation of Jackson’s capabilities and contributions. And if he concludes that “He was a soldier indeed” will be history’s verdict, history has justified his judgment. THIS BOOK IS IN FINE CONDITION This book is in fine condition.
