Steve Lacy "The Gap" (1972) with Steve Potts, Irene Aebi, Kent Carter

Description: Here we have a mighty CD of New Thing jazz, chiselled into beauty by jazz giant STEVE LACY: The Gap, first released by the America label in 1972, issued in this CD edition by Verve as part of their strictly limited Free America series in 2004, now out of print. Lacy was renowned throughout the world of jazz for his astonishing skills on the oft-abused soprano saxophone; his expertise superbly documented on a small mountain of albums and CDs, this one being a particular highlight. It features some of his most loyal players, with STEVE POTTS (soprano and alto sax) IRENE AEBI (cello), and KENT CARTER (bass), and NOEL McGHIE (drums), backing Lacy and his horn. The Gap's title track, initiated with polyphonic quintet blasts followed by momentary silence, pronounces the tune and album's title, its harmonic nooks and crannies intentionally left for group exploration. From upper register overlapping flute-like saxophone parts to Carter and Aebi's dirge arco work, Track Two, "Esteem," quickly becomes a harmonic well for intertwining reeds and polyrhythmic brushwork and drumming. The near-20 minute album centerpiece "The Thing," is where contemporary classical and chamber music meet free improv and jazz over drinks. The liner notes say, "Lacy is hardly lockable inside any stylistic drawer other than his own. There is no better example than here - subtle pitch variations between the two string players and two horns create a multitude of possibilities, exploiting the gaps as a springboard into a unique musical universe." It's easily one of Lacy's most unrestrained works, and as such is a must-own for fans. This disc (and all the others in Verve's remarkable revival of the series) is superlatively packaged in a three-panel, die-cut digipak with a beautifully designed 16-page booklet. A labor of love, issued in a one-shot limited edition, guaranteed to thrill connoisseurs of modern jazz. The disc is near mint. There is a light promotional cut through the bar code of the digipak's backside. Track listing 1 The Gap 2 Esteem 3 La Motte-Picquet 4 The Thing 5 La Motte-Picquet (Alternate Take)
