Description: Up for auction at the Grand Antique Mall, located in Cincinnati, Ohio is a STEAM LOCOMOTIVE VALVE GEAR with an engraved plate attached that reads: "JOY'S. VALVE. GEAR." Designed by British engineer DAVID JOY (1825-1903) and PATENTED in 1879 in the UK and 1882 in the USA. Joy's gear is similar to Hackworth valve gear, but Joy's has a compensating mechanism which corrects for the "slight inequality in the motion of the valve arising from the arc of the lever." The working model was either a patent model or sales model. Famous for his design of the JENNY LIND, David Joy enjoyed a successful career designing and patenting gear for railway and marine service. In 1944, Joy became manager of the drawing office where he prepared a "John Gray" locomotive with a 90 pound steam pressure, and it was here that David Joy became involved in the development of the celebrated JENNY LIND locomotive. Hallmarks: Engraved plate that reads: JOY'S. VALVE. GEAR. Dimensions: 12"H. 8" x 8" square base Weight: 8 lbs. Questions? Please send us a message, and we will promptly reply.
