Description: Stampless Envelope with Contents, sent from Gilead, Michigan (extremely small town, DPO) to Charlestown Ohio, PAID 3 in manuscript, dated 1853. Manila Envelope (138x80mm) with contents, cancelled with manuscript "GILEAD MICH 13 AUG" and matching "Paid 3", addressed to "George V. King, Esq., Charlestown, Portage Co. Ohio". No docketing, glue not holding rear flaps together, all intact and complete . Four page letter, single sheet, folded, dateline "Gilead Mich Aug 12th/53". Written to Friend King, from A.J. Woodruff (or Woodruft). Interesting content, mentioned the Crystal Palace, going to a Circus 6 miles away via Rail Road in "Iron & Glass, in imitation to the Crystal Palace", heading to Edinburgh, a dry spell and corn surviving, etc. See scan(s) for condition and good luck! NOTE: Gilead Township is a civil township of Branch County. As of the 2010 Census, the township population was 661. One can imagine that is the 1850's there were only a handful, and no stamps, thus manuscript used. There are no incorporated municipalities within the primarily agricultural township. The only concentrated settlements are in two unincorporated communities: East Gilead and Gilead - Its founding was largely the result of the efforts of Philander Chase, who came to Gilead in 1831 with plans to found a college. The college did not materialize, but the community did have a post office from 1833 until 1906.
