Description: St Lorenzo Ruiz Single Decade Rosary First Filipino Saint - Japanese Martyr Beautiful chaplet with a St Lorenzo Ruiz nickel silver medal that is 7/8" oval. The 1-3/4" wood crucifix and the medal were made in Italy; and the chaplet itself was designed and handmade by me in our home in the USA.The eleven beads are all 8 mm in size. The single Our Father bead is a smooth, round, natural, genuine Picture Jasper. The ten Hail Mary beads are faceted and fire-polished Czech glass in alternating ruby red and amethyst purple colors. He was an altar boy and was educated by the Dominicans. He was known for his unsurpassed penmanship and worked as a clerk for the church in Binondo, Manila. Married with three children, he led a quiet and religious life. This all changed when he was falsely accused of killing a Spaniard. He fled Manila with some Dominican companions for Japan, only to be caught up in the persecution of Japanese Christians there. Horribly tortured - needles under the fingernails, beatings, etc - some of his companions recanted their faith - but Lorenzo Ruiz held firm. He was finally executed by hanging upside down in a pit for 2 or 3 days - slow suffocation while stones were added to increase the suffering. He was canonized by John Paul II in 1987. He is the Filipino protomartyr and first saint of that country. The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a "greeting card" program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 "pages" and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion.
