Description: Soviet Russian USSR medal Order of the Red Star with serial number in the 3.6 million range, awarded in 1968 to Colonel Ilya Anikanov, Commander of the 296th Tank Regiment, of the 81st Guards Motorized Rifle Division! The 296th Tank Regiment was part of the Special Mechanized Army until 1957, after which it was reformed into the 1st Guards Tank Division. Its parent 81st Division sent a regiment to fight with the 33rd Mechanized Division in Budapest during the Hungarian Revolution. Available sources do not indicate that the 296th participated in the suppression of the Revolution directly as a unit, but it is conceivable that personnel would have been reshuffled from it into the fighting units. The Regiment subsequently moved with the 81st Division to Bucharest, Romania, then to Chernigov, Ukraine as part of the reformation of the Special Army into the 1st Guards Tank Army. The Army won the Order of the Red Banner in 1968, at the same time Anikanov earned his Red Star. These awards would have been for military & political training. In 1969, the 81st Division, including the 296th Tank Regiment, was transferred to the Far East, where it remained until the fall of the USSR. During WWII, Anikanov had served in the Polish Army as Assistant Chief of Staff for an Independent Motorcycle Battalion. He was awarded a Combat Merit Medal in that role for cumulative service during the war. He earned a second Merit Medal and Red Star in 1951 and 1956 respectively for long service. Scarce award to a Cold War tank regiment commander! Condition is excellent, as seen in the images! The serial number of the award is authentic and matches the serial number shown in the archival documents, obviously! If you require confirmation in advance, please send me a message, and I will gladly provide images. Over time, I have found that redacting award serial numbers in certain listings (particularly of researched awards) has acted a simple and effective filter to sort good customers from troublesome eBay hooligans. Reasonable, rational collectors who are genuinely interested in the history represented by an award will make the effort to reach out and will quickly find that everything is in order. Winner will be provided with full archival research (8 pages - including Award Record Card) in electronic format, unredacted, in color, plus an archival portrait of Anikanov, also in electronic format. Professional English translation of the Record Card is available if requested before receipt of item. No returns. All questions in advance. I will answer all coherent, respectful inquiries to the best of my ability. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING AVAILABLE only through eBay’s Global Shipping Program (GSP). With this program: once the item is delivered to the address to which eBay directs me to ship, all responsibility for final safe delivery of the item to the buyer becomes eBay’s.
