Earlier in December 2020, the comics industry started hearing buzz about a surprise comic called Solid Blood #17. Speculation abounded with most theories pointing toward Robert Kirkman as this resembled the surprise releases of Die!Die!Die! and Negan Lives. It’s challenging to review this comic without spoiling the premise. It is supposedly from an alternate dimension where The Walking Dead comic was cancelled before Michonne could appear (around #15 or so), so Solid Blood writer “Robert Kirkman” used her in this title as a major character Swordmaster (similar sword, same hair style). Solid Blood #17 is supposed to be an homage to Image’s mid-‘90s Youngblood comic in production and content. The comic itself feels like half the weight of a normal comic. Paper is very thin, non-glossy, and the coloring has the tiny dot patterns. Ryan Ottley provides Liefeld-esque artwork, cyborgs with blades, big swords, big sound effect graphics, gallons of drippy blood, Cable-esque shiny robot arms, lots of mouths in “grrrrrr” and “arrrrrgghh” poses, and (“chef’s kiss!”) I counted only five feet/boots drawn in the entire issue. If this became a movie, you know Eric Balfour would have a prominent role. -Mark Huesman
