Description: The Sixth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution 1884 – ’85 was written by James Wesley Powell Director. The Bureau of American Ethnology was established in 1879 by an act of Congress for the purpose of transferring archives, recorded and materials relating to the Indians of North America from the Interior Department to the Smithsonian Institution. From the start, the bureau’s visionary founding director, John Wesley Powell, promoted a broader mission: “to organize anthropologic research in America”. This copy of the book originally belonged to James Whitcomb Buell (1843 – 1897). Buell was an officer in both the US Army and Navy. In 1875 he married and was stationed at Ft. Concho, Texas (San Angelo) a post set up to fight local Indians and protect the local settlers. Retired for medical reasons in 1891 he moved to Ft. Smith, Arkansas where he died in 1897. At some point in the time the book became the property of his son Arthur Whitcomb Buell (1879 - ?) who was a graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, one time mining engineer with Standard Oil in Ecuador and later a long time instructor at the Colorado School of Mines. The book was donated to the Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines and later withdrawn. There are over 500 black and white illustrations that cover material produced by some of America’s earliest field anthropologist including: Prof. Cyrus Thomas, Mr. James Stevenson, Mr. Victor Mindeleff, Mrs. Erminnie Smith, Rev. J. Owen Dorsey, and many others. There are two maps in the back pocket showing the Eskimo Tribes of North-East America. Both maps have some foxing but are otherwise in excellent condition.
