SIR RALPH RICHARDSON - AUTOGRAPH 10/15/1945 - HFSID 22812 RALPH RICHARDSON. Signature: "Best wishes/Ralph Richardson" and "and/his boyfriend/[illegible]", 5¾x4. Ink note (unknown hand): "Signed for A E.J. October 15th 1945 Old Vic Liason (sic) New Theatre". British actor Ralph Richardson signed this autograph the year after he and his friend, Laurence Olivier, were released from British military service to help boost morale by reviving the Old Vic Company, which had been bombed out of its old premises. Richardson appeared in three productions at the new theater in 1945: in the title role in Peer Gynt (1945-146), as Falstaff in Henry IV (1945-1946) and in Cyrano de Bergerac (1945). In 1946, he toured the U.S. with the new Old Vic Company. Sir Ralph Richardson (1902-1983) was one of the most esteemed British actors of the 20th century. Richardson, who debuted as a Shakespearean actor in 1921, first appeared at London's Old Vic in 1930, four years before he made his first film, The Ghoul, with Boris Karloff. Richardson appeared in over 70 films, including The Heiress (1949) and Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984), for which he received nominations for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, and Breaking the Sound Barrier (1952), for which he received a British Academy Award. His feature film credits also include Anna Karenina (1948), Richard III (1955), Exodus (1960), Long Day's Journey into Night (1962), The 300 Spartans (1962), Dr. Zhivago (1965), Khartoum (1966) and Tales From the Crypt (1972, as the crypt keeper). He also continued to appear on stage as well as in a number of TV productions, including David Copperfield (1970), The Man in the Iron Mask (1977), Jesus of Nazareth (1977) and Witness for the Prosecution (1982). We could not find any reference to a "boyfriend". Richardson was married to Muriel Hewitt from 1924 to her death in 1942 and to Meriel Forbes from 1944 until his death in 1983. Meriel and Ralph had one son. Irregularly cut. Stained at upper edge and lower right blank margin. Ink note on verso shows through slightly at signature of "boyfriend." Overall, fine condition.
