Description: Pope Venerable Pius XII 1950 Jubilee YearSingle Decade Rosary Beautiful single decade rosary with a vintage silver-toned medal with the image of Pope Pius XII on one side and on the other, an image of the Holy Door with the words "Ego sum ostium per me si quis introierit salvabitur" (Latin: "I am the door, if anyone enters through me he will be saved"); and also the Jublilee year 1950 also in Latin. The medal is very old with quite a bit of oxidation yet the images are very clear; probably it was made in Italy. The medal itself is such an interesting piece of Church history - Pius XII declared the Jubilee year in 1950 and went through all the traditions including knocking on the Holy Door, which then was removed, and announced the usual indulgence if a person entered the Vatican in bare feet through the Holy Door. Because the medal is rare and an antique - over 70 years old - I had to pay quite a bit more for it so the price of this chaplet reflects that.The 1-1/2" wooden crucifix was made in Italy and has silver trim and corpus; I designed and handmade the chaplet in our home in the USA. The eleven beads are all 8 mm, smooth, round, natural, genuine semi-precious gemstones. The ten Hail Mary beads are alternating Picture Jasper and Tree Agate. The single Our Father is a Green Adventurine. Born in 1876, he had spent many years representing the Vatican as a statesman and diplomat; as Papal nuncio to Bavaria, Prussia and Germany and Cardinal Secretary of State, before being elected Pope in 1939. Much has been written about this pope, some of it critical of his public reaction to the holocaust; although most of this has been countered by historical records which prove that he discreetly ordered the Church to aid Jews and others, actually saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Many Jewish leaders of the world have publicly praised his efforts. He had a very active papacy; writing forty one encyclicals and giving 1000 addresses and radio broadcasts; published the Decree against Communism; dealt with extreme persecution of the Church in Eastern bloc countries; and led liturgical and other reforms. Probably his most important act was declaring, infallibly, the Doctrine of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, body and soul, in 1950, only the second infallible declaration by a pope in the past 168 years. (The other was the Immaculate Conception of Mary in 1854 by Pope Pius IX.) Both of these concepts had a long history in the Church going back to its beginnings but had never been perfectly stated as a required belief of the faithful. Pope Pius XII was declared Venerable in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI and there are already several miracles approved by the Vatican which should pave the way for his beatification and eventual sainthood someday!The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a "greeting card" program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper.
