Description: Signed Marilyn Andrews Intrusions Social Commentary '88 Ceramic Bowl Liberal Art Click images to enlarge Description TITLE: Signed Marilyn Andrews Intrusions Social Commentary '88 Ceramic Bowl Liberal Art DESCRIPTION: Dating to 1988, this stoneware footed bowl by noted ceramicist/artist Marilyn Andrews is a wonderful example of using art as social commentary. This tall ceramic bowl rests on four triangular, close-set feet. The outside of the bowl has four hand-painted portraits of people who appear to be Native American. Between these portraits are paintings of the ways technology intrudes on the natural world: a tree with a large gear behind it, a space shuttle, an oil tower and a high-voltage electrical tower. Inside the bowl, which has a rough, wavy rim, you'll see the points of the four feet intruding through the base. The inside of the bowl is painted with scenes from an 80s-contemporary house: a person in a living room pointing at a blurry television image; and children eating boxed cereal in a contemporary dining room, waving goodbye to their father who is off to drive his gigantic car to work. The point of this is clear: technology makes some lives easier, at the expense of the natural world and the people who value the land. The piece is signed "Intrusions" and "3/88" (we believe this is a date, given the modernity of the subject, and not a number in a series) and "Marilyn Andrews" on the underside of one foot. A rare and intriguing piece of art that is sure to be a conversation piece! CONDITION: Bowl is offered in good, as found vintage condition, with minimal to no discoloration or patina. One triangular foot has been repaired, leaving a fracture near the base and has a small chip near the bottom of the foot. No other cracks or damage have been noted. Roughness along the rim is intentional. Please review all photos before purchasing. DIMENSIONS: 8-1/4" in height (at tallest spot; this will have some variation due to the wavy rim), top measures 8-1/2" in x 8-3/4" in (again, expect some slight variation), each foot measures appx. 2-5/8" in wide x 2-1/4" in tall/deep.
