"The head of Space Camp (Buckbee) and a distinguished retired astronaut and raconteur tell the story of the American space program, through the moon landings. Originally conceived as a tribute to mutual friend Alan Shepard, the first American to orbit the earth, the book ends up providing capsule biographies of all of the Mercury Seven, the additional astronauts who landed on the moon, astronauts who didn't return safely, and nonastronauts who were key figures in getting into space, such as John F. Kennedy and Wernher von Braun. Buckbee and Schirra maintain a sense of proportion, and also of humor, about the perils, promises, frustrations, and failures of those days." One of the four signatures is Ernst Stuhlinger (December 19, 1913 – May 25, 2008) was a German-American atomic, electrical, and rocket scientist. After being brought to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip, he developed guidance systems with Wernher von Braun's team for the US Army, and later was a scientist with NASA. He was also instrumental in the development of the ion engine for long-endurance space flight, and a wide variety of scientific experiments. The second signature is William Cameron "Willie" McCool (born William Cameron Graham September 23, 1961 – February 1, 2003) was an American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, and NASA astronaut, who was the pilot of Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-107. He and the rest of the crew of STS-107 were killed when Columbia disintegrated during reentry into the atmosphere. McCool was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. The third signature is Walter W. Jacobi (January 13, 1918 – August 19, 2009) was a rocket scientist and member of the "von Braun rocket group", at Peenemünde (1939–1945) working on the V-2 rockets in World War II. Also a member of Operation Paperclip German scientists in Huntsville Alabama. The fourth signature is hard to decipher, but, without a sample of his signature, and just a list of German scientists, it is probably Adolf K (Karl) Thiel, also spelled Adolph, February 12, 1915 - June 2, 2001, an Austrian born German expert in guided missile during WWII. Thiel had been an associate professor of engineering at the in Darmstadt before joining Von Braun’s team at the Army Research Center in Peenumunde, where he was involved in developing the V-2 rocket . By the end of the war, he was transferred to the United States by the US Army (Operation Paperclip) where he resumed his work with von Braun's group in Ft. Bliss Texas. During the nine years Thiel worked for the U.S. Army, he held positions at White Sands Missile Range and at Huntsville . He primarily supervised preliminary design of the missile and other short- and intermediate-range ballistic missile systems.
