SIGMUND FREUD TYPED LETTER SIGNED, NEUROLOGIST, PSYCHOANALISIST, CANCER

Description: FREUD FOUNDED THE INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOANALYTICAL ASSOCIATION (IPA) IN 1910 WITH A GROUP OF HIS FOLLOWERS AND SUBSEQUENTLY SOME WOULD EVENTUALLY WITHDRAW AND FOUND THEIR OWN SCHOOLS, INCLUDING ALFRED ADLER AND CARL JUNG. THE FINAL DEFECTION OF HIS INNER-CIRCLE OCCURRED WITH ONE OF HIS CLOSEST COLLEAGUES, OTTO RANK, DURING 1924, THE YEAR OF THIS LETTER AND THE YEAR OF THE PUBLICATION OF FREUD’S PAPER, “THE DISSOLUTION OF THE OEDIPUS COMPLEX”, WHICH OPENLY DISAGREED WITH THE THEORY PROMULGATED BY RANK. MORE TROUBLING, WAS THE PREVIOUS YEARS DISCOVERY OF A LESION IN FREUD’S MOUTH THAT WAS LATER IDENTIFIED TO BE CANCEROUS FROM HIS HEAVY CIGAR SMOKING. DURING 1923 & 1924 HE UNDERWENT A SERIES OF OPERATIONS BY A LONG LIST OF MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WHO IN MANY CASES LIED ABOUT THE SERIOUSNESS OF HIS CONDITION AND IN ONE CASE A DOCTOR PERFORMED AN UNNESSESARY COSMETIC SURGERY AND FREUD NARROWLY ESCAPED DEATH. IN THIS LETTER FREUD WRITES TO AN IPA MEMBER, “DEAR DOCTOR”, ABOUT SETTING UP A MEETING, BUT IS HAVING DIFFICULTY SETTING A DAY WITH SO MANY OTHER MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS. HE ALSO ANNOUNCES THAT HE HAS DECIDED TO RESIGN FROM THE LEADERSHIP OF THE IPA. A FEW WEEKS AFTER THE DATE OF THIS LETTER FREUD WOULD BE ON THE COVER OF TIME MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 27, 1924. SIGMUMD FREUD (1856-1939) TYPED LETTER SIGNED, “Freud”, one page, 6 x 8.75, on his personal letterhead, “Prof. Dr. Freud”, Wien [Vienna] IX, Berggasse 19 [his office], September 13, 1924, Semmering [Austria], to “Dear Doctor”, by the Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. In part (in German, with translation): “…It is true that visits still tire me very much, but your wish for a conversation concurs with mine, because I have decided to resign from the leadership of the group; I would like to hear your opinion about the consequences. When should this conversation take place? The next week is completely unsuitable for me since my physicians are coming back, and I do not know of any day when I will be here or in Vienna; when I am in Vienna it is always difficult for me to be on time for the train for my return. But in 14 days we will move to Vienna and I suggest to you to plan your visit perhaps for one of the last days of this month.” Freud struggled with mouth cancer until his death in 1939. the pain had become so severe that he committed suicide with the help of a physician friend, who administered fatal doses of morphine over the course of two days.
