The Shelley story started around 1860 when the Wileman Family built a new pottery (they owned a large pottery called Foley Works producing earthenware) for the production of fine china. Joseph Shelley started working for the company a couple years later as a traveling salesman. Some time after 1870 he became a partner in the company which was then named Wileman and Company. Shelley was in charge of running the new factory making fine bone china. Percy Shelley (Joseph's son) came into the company around 1881 and eventually ran the company. Around 1910 the company was renamed Shelley and when WWII started the earthenware pottery was closed. In the 1950's the company made some of the best bone china produced and exports were a large part of the business. The company was sold to Allied Potteries in 1966 and production ceased, although inventory was sold for several years after.
