Description: Sheepshead Bay - 1900's - Standing Start - Horse Racing - Grandstand Sheepshead Bay—Located in Brooklyn, NY, the track opened in 1880. In 1886, a one-mile turf course (the first turf course in the United States) ran along the inside of the then-main dirt track. In 1908, New York state banned gambling, and within three years, the track was hosting automobile racing. Sheepshead Bay was closed in 1919 and later torn down for development. Some of the significant races started at this track are still run today. The Suburban Handicap, Swift Stakes, Sheepshead Bay Handicap, Futurity, and Long Island Handicap, to name a few. My collection of over 2,500 postcards of horse race tracks and related subjects is a unique treasure trove for enthusiasts. It includes present-day tracks and those that are now just memories, each postcard a one-of-a-kind piece of history. Your interest in my collection is truly appreciated. If you decide to make multiple purchases, I will adjust the shipping cost and refund you the balance. Your support is invaluable and means a lot to me. Questions, send me a message.
