Description: Sexology was a pathbreaking magazine about the practice of human sexuality, founded by polymath and publisher Hugo Gernsback. (Gernsback was the namesake of the “Hugo” award for outstanding science fiction writing.) It was published in New York City between 1933 and 1983. The magazine had a circulation of up to 200,000 at its peak, and was also known under the titles Sexology Together and Sexology Today. At time of closure, the magazine was published by Medi-Media Publications. This November 1961 issue (in the 29th year of publication) is in very good condition, with one area of fading on back cover and very small crease to lower right-hand corner of cover and some inside pages. See pic of Table of Contents for fascinating articles on, e.g., “Punishment and Masochism,” “New Ways in Church Thinking,” “The Sex Offender—After Prison What?,” and “The Five Sexes of Man[kind]” (take that, Marjorie Taylor Green!). From a 1983 newspaper article entitled “Sex magazine falls victim to revolution it promoted”: “The 96-page magazine was a ‘how-to’ manual, with illustrative photos and some artwork….Tabatch said it was the oldest sex magazine in the country. ‘It was always meant to be used as an aide for sex,…[He] said the demise of Sexology Today was a testament to its success. ‘It’s not healthy for us that it folded, of course….But it does reflect a certain positive side to society. Gernsback had a very keen interest in providing people with a clear understanding of sex, to destroy the myths and fallacies. He started a whole revolution in sex magazines,’ Tabatch said.”
