HULING, REPUBLIC OF TEXAS, IN A MANUSCRIPT DEED OF SALE DATED JULY 8, 1845 Publication: Republic of Texas, County of Jasper: July 8, 1845 Description: Single sheet, folded, 3 pp. of text, docketed on the fourth page. 32 cm., approx. 180 words. Signed by Sophia Ralph, and two witnesses, and by M.B. Lewis, Chief Justice of the County of Jasper. Tipped on to page 3 is a manuscript plat map of Sophia Dean's league of land in Jefferson County, outlined in red, and showing her neighbors, and a small section of her league in dispute with Thos. F. McKenney. Paper browned, second integral leaf split horizontally, not affecting text. A tender copy.In consideration of the sum of $2000, Ralph sold Huling the league granted to her as a colonist by the Mexican government's commissioner G.A. Nixon, "with the saving & exception of four hundred acres more or less that the older survey of Thos. F. McKinney, agt. for Roney (sp?), may conflict with the same, as may be further seen by reference to the map...." Sophia [Sofia] Dean is listed in Gifford White's book "Character Certificates in the General Land Office of Texas," [Baltimore, MD: 2001, p.50] as a widow, living in Nacogdoches, on 3 Dec. 1834. A note attached to her record by the alcalde of Nacogdoches, Vital Flores, indicates she had two children, and her property was part of the Zavalla grant between Pine Island Bayou and the Neches. George A. Nixon, who granted her this league of land was a commissioner for the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company, according to his brief biography by Madeleine Martin in the "Handbook of Texas" [online]. He sold land on the empressario grants of David Burnet, Joseph Vehlein, and Lorenzo de Zavala, beginning in June 1834. "By the end of 1835 he had issued more than 1,000 titles." The Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company, however, did not own the Texas land but sold scrip to the incoming settlers, leaving it up to them to satisfy the requirements of Mexican colonization law in order to obtain legal title.By March 1836, the independent, sovereign Republic of Texas was established, separating itself from Mexico. It existed until February 1846. Although it was formally annexed to the United States on Dec. 29, 1845, becoming the 28th state, President Anson Jones did not officially relinquished control over the government until about two months later.Thomas B. Huling (1804-1865), who purchased Sophia Ralph's league of land, represented Jasper County in the Fifth Congress of the Republic of Texas, 1840-41.
