Description: Seal Beach, California Circa 1920’s During the 1920's, Seal Beach was known as the pleasure place. To attract tourists an amusement area called The “Joy Zone” was built adjacent to the Seal Beach first pier. Beach-goers came to Seal Beach to picnic, “ocean bathe,” or ride the big roller coaster that whisked riders around the rickety tracks at high speeds. A large structure was erected at the foot of the pier. The first floor served as a bathhouse, while the second story was the Jewel Café dance hall, a great place for young people to congregate after a day in the surf or playing in the Joy Zone. Seal Beach featured bath palaces, a huge roller coaster, gaming rooms, gambling ships, rum runners and wicker boardwalk carts. Scintillating lights illuminated the water and night bathers from the second longest pier in the state. Bathing Pavilion with 1000 dressing rooms renting for 25 cents each, opened directly onto the beach. Their motto was: A beach without an undertow.
