"Hippocampus" comes from the Ancient Greek hippokampos, itself from hippos meaning "horse" and kampos meaning "sea monster". Having a head and neck suggestive of a horse, seahorses also feature segmented bony armour, an upright posture and a curled prehensile tail. Along with the pipefishes and seadragons (Phycodurus and Phyllopteryx) they form the family Syngnathidae. The original art was created with colored pencil and watercolor on mixed media paper. This print has been meticulously rendered to best represent the colors in the original work. Printed on premium gloss photography paper with Epson Ultra Chrome HG2 professional archival inks.
