Drives - especially white label drives - can sometimes need a "pin 3" mod to power up. It's super simple and can be done with a small piece of tape. The boring technical reason for this is that the newer SATA standards don't use the 3.3 volt power pin anymore (because no drives ever used it) and now use it as a "power yourself off" pin. Power supplies which provide 3.3 volts are constantly telling the drive to turn off. Blocking pin 3 fixes that.
