While it tends to have a slightly dry texture and a more uniform color, it remains highly favored and serves as an excellent alternative to Hotan jade. Furthermore, its thicker white oxide skin reveals a mineral-tinted layer beneath, often appearing dark brown, resulting in a distinct color boundary. This characteristic renders it ideal for replicating ancient jade and Hotan jade. Mining operations began in the early 1990s, with an annual output of approximately 500 tons, ranking second only to Qinghai jade. Leveraging its inherent advantages, Russian jade is frequently imitated to resemble the jade used in Qing Dynasty imperial court ornaments and high-quality white jade accessories in folk art, thus becoming the primary material for jade artifacts auctioned in recent years. Russian nephrite often appears in today’s market and impresses collectors with its quality. However, Russian jade is abundant in supply, which suppresses its price. Therefore, it’s important to identify Russian jades and price them properly. The best way to familiarize yourself with Russian jade is to own rough jade samples from Russian jade mines. Positively identified Russian jades aren't cheap, and the only available samples are scraps. I wouldn't be surprised if a fully carved product is tagged as Hotan jade, even imperial antique jade instead of modern Russian jade.
