Description: Scare Rock Island EMD Builder Plate for SW900M SwitcherBuilt November 1958 Up for auction tonight is this EMD builder's plate off of Rock Island number 563, an SW900 switcher built in November 1958. (Technically, 563 was rebuilt from a 1930s-era Electro-Motive Corporation SW switcher with a Winston engine and designated as an SW900M.) EMD built only 274 SW900 switchers, and only 29 for the Rock Island, all of them rebuilds of the earlier EMC SWs. The plate obviously saw a lot of wear in its 32-plus years -- there's paint loss and damage to the left mounting hole, and some crinkling, particularly at the lower left and the right side. But the stampings are clear and deep, and best of all is the bit of Rock Island maroon at the bottom and especially the top edge of the plate. I was lucky to find a photo of 563 wearing that maroon paint working in Keokuk in May 1979 in Mike Sosalla's gallery of Rock Island locomotives. Perhaps this is the builder plate seen in the photo.
