HOLABIRD - ANNOTATED DOCUMENT SIGNED 09/12/1863 - HFSID 177235 SAMUEL B. HOLABIRD Samuel B. Holabird signed this war-dated document in 1863 as Chief Quartermaster of the U. S. Army's Department of the Gulf to acknowledge the receipt of $3,386.84 in quartermaster's funds. Holabird later became Chief Quartermaster of the Army 20 years after signing this document. Annotated document signed "S. B. Holabird" as Chief Quartermaster of the Department of the Gulf. 1 page, 7x10. New Orleans, Lousiana, Sept. 12, 1893. Holabird signed this document to acknowledge that he had received $3,386.84 in quartermaster's funds from Capt. J. W. McClure, Assistant Quartermaster of the United States Army. Holabird (1826-1907) served in Texas (1849-1858) after graduating from West Point. He entered the Civil War with the Quartermaster's Department a Captain. He was present at the battle of Antietam and was made Chief Quartermaster of the Gulf in 1862 and breveted a brigadier general shortly before the end of the war. He was appointed a Deputy Quartermaster General as a lieutenant colonel in 1886 and successively served as Chief Quartermaster in the Departments of Dakota, Texas, Missouri, Pacific and California between 1867 and 1879. Holabird was made an assistant Quartermaster General in 1881 and, two years later, became 17th Quartermaster General (1883-1890). Among Holabird's duties were paying off claims for items requisitioned by the Army from civilian farms during the Civil War; the last of these weren't paid off until 1889. He also tried, unsuccessfully, to create a dedicated armywide corps Quartermasters instead of taking enlisted men from other branches. He retired in 1890. Lightly toned and creased. Handwriting, but not signature, is lightly smeared in places but legible. Show-through from docket touches handwriting but not signature. Light tears at left and right edges.
