Book: A facsimile of the 1907 publication, printed in Japan, as a first edition in 1971. The book was used to introduce Japanese students reading English through the literature of the West. There are eleven pages of notes to assist in understanding Oscar Wilde's prose. The Book is part of a private library that belonged to a linguistics professor and Japanese translator. The book is inscribed from "John" (John Hinds: "Aspects of Japanese Discourse Structure", released at a time when interest in Japanese grammar and structure was just blossoming) to "Rich" (Richard Markley: teacher, lingistics prof., translator), "June 1976". Both were living in Japan during the 1970s. John Hinds pasted additional Aubrey Beardsley art to the free end papers at the front and back of the book and inside the back cover. Japanese linguists, translators, and admirers of Aubrey Beardsley's Art Nouveau style might enjoy the intellectual academic's sophomoric approach to Beardsley's art that speaks to their friendship during that cultural-revolutionary time of the 1960s and 1970s.
