Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Montceaux is known for the former château, which Henri II gave to Catherine de' Medici in 1556, was her earliest building project. The building consisted of a central pavilion housing a straight staircase, and two wings with a pavilion at each end. Catherine wanted to cover the alley in the garden where Henry played pall-mall, an early form of croquet. For this commission, Philibert de l'Orme built her a grotto set on a base made to look like natural rock, from which guests could watch the games while taking refreshments. The work was completed in 1558 but has not survived. Given by Henri IV to Marie de' Medici, the château ceased to be used as a royal residence after 1640, and had fallen into ruin by the time it was demolished by revolutionary decree in 1798. Some ruins remain, a chapel and the buildings of the forecourt, transformed into private dwellings. ___________________ Leon Palustre of Montifault (born 4 February 1838 in Saivres, died 26 October 1894 in Saint-Symphorien) was one of France's premier archaeologist. In 1885, Leon Palustre, resigned as president of the French Archaeological Society, to devote himself to his book on the art and architecture of France during the Renaissance, which he would not live to finish. The first three volumes, which were published (1879 , 1881 and 1885), were awarded the Guérin of the French Academy. Most of the illustrations were printed from copper plate engravings illustrated by Eugene Sadoux and L. Gautier. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
