Description: Iowa State University of Science and Technology is a public land-grant research university in Ames, Iowa that started out as the Iowa Agricultural College. It is the largest university in the state of Iowa, and the third largest university in the Big 12 athletic conference. Founded in 1858 and coeducational from its start, Iowa State became the nation’s first designated land-grant institution when the Iowa Legislature accepted the provisions of the 1862 Morrill act in 1862. Iowa subsequently designated Iowa State as the land-grant college in 1864. From the start, the school focused on the ideals that higher education should be accessible to all and that the university should teach liberal and practical subjects. The first preparatory class was admitted in 1868 and the first graduating class of 1872 consisted of 24 men and two women. William M. Beardshear was appointed President of Iowa State in 1891 and served until 1902. He developed new agricultural programs and was instrumental in hiring premier faculty members. He also expanded the university administration, and added Morrill Hall, The Campanile, Old Botany (now Carrie Chapman Catt Hall), and Margaret Hall to the campus, all of which stand today. In honor, Iowa State named its central admin building (Central Building, built in 1908,) after Beardshear in 1925. The Real Photo Card is not credited and was post marked 1925, in Pomeroy. It is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The reverse is addressed and clean.
