Description: Deering is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire that was first settled about 1765 and was incorporated in 1774 by John D. Wentworth, governor of the province of New Hampshire. He named it Deering after the maiden name of his wife, Frances Deering Wentworth, just as two years earlier he bestowed Francestown with her first name. Deering had 928 residents when the first census was taken in 1790. Its hills and valleys were well suited for agriculture and industries included two sawmills, one gristmill and one clothing factory. From the 1780s to 1920, the Deering Center property was the Kincaid Farm run by many generations of Kincaid’s. In 1920 this property, along with five other farms in Deering, were purchased by Dr. Eleanor Campbell, a physician and humanitarian. She allowed the townspeople of Deering to farm her land, without charge. During the depression, Dr. Campbell hired many area craftsmen to build “The Deering Community Center. Her goal was to open the center to provide a free medical clinic and camp for the poor rural town of Deering and surrounding towns. In 1933 over 300 young campers from the area began a summer camp at the Community Center but Campbell knew that the community could not support the center and the camp. In 1946, she donated the land including an additional 2000 acres to the United Church of Christ who ran the “Deering Conference Center from 1949 to 1989, when it closed due to severe debt and lack of support. This is “Phelps Photo, Hillsborough” real photo card postmarked 1963. It captures a beach at the Conference Center on the Deering Reservoir with some swimmers in the lake. It is in good condition with intact corners and edges and a clean, clear image. The reverse is written on and is clean.
