Description: Banff is a town within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It is located in Alberta’s Rockies along the Trans-Canada Highway, approximately 78 miles west of Calgary and 36 mi east of Lake Louise. At 4,590 to 5,350 feet above sea level, Banff is the community with the second highest elevation in Alberta, after Lake Louise. Banff was first settled in the 1880s after the transcontinental railway was built through the Bow Valley. In 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway workers stumbled upon a series of natural hot springs on the side of Sulphur Mountain. In 1885, Canada established a federal reserve around the “Cave and Basin” hot springs and began promoting the area as an international resort and spa as a way to support the new railway. In 1887, the reserve area was increased to 260 sq. miles and named “Rocky Mountain Park”. It was the beginning of Canada’s National Park system. Bryon Harmon arrived in Alberta in 1903 as an itinerant photographer after leaving his portrait studio in Tacoma, Washington. By 1906 He had become a founding member and official photographer of the Alpine Club of Canada. He took over 6,400 photographs while exploring the Canadian Rockies and the Selkirks and in 1907 he began turning many of these photographs into real photo postcards, which became his principal life’s work until he died in 1942.This card has a postmark 1939 with 1930 autos in the image. It is in good condition except for a bent upper right corner and just minor wear overall. The image is clean and clear. as is the reverse.
