Forage is difficult to find, and the cold temperatures make it necessary for them to eat more than usual in order to maintain their body temperature. The snow not ony covers their food sources but also makes movement difficult. Crusted snow can even cut the legs of the deer. In addition, deer will often cross frozen rivers to search for forage along the bushy riverbanks. If the ice isn't well formed, the deer may plunge through it into the icy water below. A slow, lingering death is the usual result. I have witnessed a few of these accidents, and only once was the deer, a young buck, able to scramble out of the icy water and back onto the ice. I have shown this pair of whitetails at the creek side as the dusk begins to darken the snowy landscape....Ron Parker Ron Parker is a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, who lives in Wasa, in the Rocky Mountain trench on a waterfowl flyway.
