Description: Method of payment Roman Emperor Caligula Piroli 1805 Copper Engraving An Original Historical Print from HistoryOnPaper Caligula was Roman emperor from 37 to 41 AD. The son of the popular Roman general Germanicus and Augustus's granddaughter Agrippina the Elder, Caligula was born into the first ruling family of the Roman Empire, conventionally known as the Julio-Claudian dynasty. (Below is a rough translation from the French of the engraving's description.) Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Without recourse to the conjectures sought, one could recognize in this bronze a head of Mercury; frizzy hair, the inclination of the head; the report easy to grasp between his features and those of the Mercury formerly called Antin, would favor this explanation. We have seen in the severity of this figure, a melancholy expression which suited the moral portrait of this beloved nephew of Augustus, his adopted son, that virtuous prince, worthy of the fortune for which he was destined, reaped in the flower of the youth, the loves of the Roman people: "Marcellus adolescent," said Seneca, with a lively mind, a powerful genius, a frugality and a restraint very admirable in his time and his fortune, patient in the work far from pleasure, capable of carrying all the weight which his uncle had imposed upon him, and to speak thus, the whole edifice of grandeur which Augustus had wished to found on him (Sen. ad Mark, 2). He fell, and his twentieth year stopped before him (Prop. III, E. XII, 35). Young man distinguished by his beauty and brilliant weapons; but the forehead not very happy and his face downcast (Virg, VI, 863). If nothing here is repugnant to this touching portrait, if some ancient gems, with which our bronze has a great degree of resemblance, have deserved the same application (Fabri, No. 87.-Mus., Fiorent, I., II, II. No. 5.-Cap., II, IV, etc.); we must also say that no sufficient authority has confirmed it, and we report this opinion only because the memory rests agreeably on a regretted prince of his century, and whose preservation might have saved the Roman people from the oppression and degradation where he fell under his masters after Augustus.Read Historical Note Below. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
