Description: Robert Lewis Dabney (1820-98), was a southern Presbyterian Minister and theologian, Confederate Army chaplain, and architect from Virginia and for forty years Professor in Virginia's Union Seminary. A contemporary considered him "the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not in the world." He participated in the Civil War, first as chaplain of the 18th Virginia regiment and later as chief of staff to Stonewall Jackson during the Valley Campaign and the Seven Days battles. After the war, Dbney spoke widely on Jackson and the Confederacy and continued to support slavery. He also became the leading theological guide of the Southern Presbyterian Church and achieved greatness as a preacher and writer and occupied a place of importance in theological history of the country. Dabney practically founded and maintained the Austin School of Theology (later the Austin Presbyterian Seminary). In 1870, he served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of the United States. Dabney was also a prolific scholar and compiled an extensive bibliography. Among his publications was Discussions, four volumes of his shorter essays (1890-97), edited by C. R. Vaughan. For sale are two essays from volume IV (Secular) of Discussions: "Narrative of Col. John B. Brown of His Secret Interview with Abraham Lincoln in 1861, Disclosing the Origin of the War," pp. 71-86 and Dabney's "The Real Cause of the War", pp. 101-107. Baldwin (1820-73) was a Virginia lawyer and democratic politician. A former representative in the Virginia House of Delegates, he was a representative to the First and Second Confederate Congresses and became one of Jefferson Davis'; leading critics. Baldwin was a Unionist and was sent to negotiate with Lincoln on the eve of Virginia's secession. His negations are the basis of his memoir. Both Baldwin and Dabney attributed the war to the Republican Party's desire to maintain and enlarge its control of the government. The combined reprinted pieces are entitled The Origin & Real Cause of the War (Collins, MO: Homestead Printing, nd). Soft Cover, 1st?, 24 pp, 24 pp; very minor age related wear; slight vertical sun fade along front and back edge of spine; small stain on forward edges of pp 15-17; otherwise, very good.
