In a quick turn of events, Richard Childress, Earnhardt's longtime friend, was in a position to form a championship caliber team just needing a driver and deep-pocketed primary sponsor. Almost overnight that team came together when Earnhardt was released from the Moore contract and took Wrangler sponsorship with him. The arrangement was facilitated by Wrangler's agreement to continue the full year sponsorship with Moore, hiring Rudd to drive and supplying the team with engines and cars and technical assistance from the Childress shop. Wrangler would also have Earnhardt and Rudd join in an advertising and promotion partnership.
