Portocarrero attended short courses at the Academia Villate and San Alejandro between 1924 and 1926, but his training could be considered almost self-taught. In 1937, he was the advisor of the Free Studio for Painters and Sculptors of Havana and collaborated on the magazine Verbum. In 1943, he created important series of paintings such as Interiors of the Hill, Festivals, Figures for an Imaginary Mythology, which reflect the lines that would make up his cosmogony. Around 1950, he began to practice ceramics and received a national painting award in 1951 for his oil painting Homage to Trinidad, an antecedent to his "landscapes of Havana". He published Masks, based on the carnival of Cienfuegos. In 1962, he had an exhibition known as "Color of Cuba", composed of religious images and carnival figures. He received several awards and his work is full of cathedrals, witches, and devils, with an eclectic mix of styles and an impactful palette. In 1979, he was named honorary advisory member of the International Association of Plastic Artists of UNESCO, and the New York Times called him the greatest contemporary painter of Cuba. When we think of Portocarrero, we think of the colors of the rainbow and the light of tropical days. RENE PORTOCARRERO . Grabado. Serigrafia / cartulina. Arte contemporáneo.
