Die Beitrage des Sammelbands Religion, Macht, Politik, die zum grossen Teil aus einem internationalen Arbeitsgesprach an der Herzog August Bibliothek im Herbst 2011 hervorgegangen sind, fragen nach Herkunft, Selbstverstandnis und Status geistlicher Funktionseliten und nach deren Moglichkeiten, Bedingungen und Grenzen fur politisches Handeln zwischen 1500 und 1800. Einen Schwerpunkt der Betrachtung bildet dabei das variantenreiche Feld lutherischer Territorien, aber es werden auch reformierte, katholische und russisch-orthodoxe Fallbeispiele angefuhrt, die sowohl Parallelen als auch Differenzen sichtbar werden lassen.
